Digestive Enzymes for Dogs and Cats
Did you know that digestive enzymes are important for your dog or cat’s overall health and longevity? Let’s find out why!
What are digestive enzymes?
Enzymes are proteins that help accelerate chemical reactions within the body. There are two main types of enzymes: metabolic and digestive.
- Metabolic enzymes are essential for helping keep the body in proper balance. They are involved in every process in the body.
- Digestive enzymes work exclusively in the gastrointestinal tract to help aid digestion. Examples of different digestive enzymes in pets include protease (which digests protein), amylase (which digests starch), lipase (which digests fat), and cellulase (which digests vegetables and fibers).
Why Are Digestive Enzymes Important?
Digestive enzymes are crucial for proper digestion. They are responsible for breaking down food so that the body can use those essential nutrients. Digestive enzymes are produced in two ways; they are available in food and they are produced internally by the body.
However, natural enzymes aren’t found in just any food. They thrive in food that is natural and uncooked, and they are easily destroyed by heat, food preservatives, additives, flavor enhancers, and more. Therefore, most cooked and processed pet foods contain little or no digestive enzymes at all!
When pets don't receive these necessary digestive enzymes from their diet, their bodies have to produce all of the enzymes that they need. This often places a strain on the pancreas, which has to constantly produce digestive enzymes instead of help with the immune system.
All of this can cause a lot of stress on the digestive system, which can lead to health concerns. Poor digestion and nutrient malabsorption can cause loose stools, bad breath, allergies, arthritis, skin issues, a compromised immune system, and cancer.
Digestive Enzyme Supplements for Dogs & Cats
If your pet has digestive issues or if you're feeding your pet cooked or processed food, your pet may benefit from a digestive enzyme supplement. Supplemental enzymes can help replace the enzymes that are destroyed by cooking and processing food. And that's why we created Total Digest! This digestive enzyme powder was developed to help dogs and cats with digestion and nutrient absorption.
The enzymes in Total Digest help break down more of the ingredients and fillers in pet food, providing pets with more nutrients, which helps support their energy levels, immune systems, and overall health. This digestive enzyme powder will also help pets with occasional digestive upset, loose stools, bloating, and gas.
Probiotics for Dogs & Cats
When pets are stressed, they often develop a bacterial imbalance in the gut. This can lead to digestive upset and cat or dog diarrhea. When this occurs, pets may benefit from a probiotic which contains beneficial bacteria that help re-establish and maintain a healthy gut. Acidophilus Forte from Thomas Labs® is a probiotic supplement that is specially formulated for dogs, cats, and birds. This pet probiotic uses high levels of Lactobacillus acidophilus to promote gut health and optimize bacteria levels in the gut.
Because digestive enzymes and probiotics are so important for your pet's health, we recommend adding them to your pet's diet to help him process food and absorb the nutrients he needs to thrive!
