What Causes Hot Spots on Dogs & Cats?
Dermatitis can result in itchy, irritated, inflamed, dry, or greasy skin. When the skin is excessively scratched, it can lead to hot spots on dogs and cats. Hot spots can be caused by anything that irritates the skin and causes the dog or cat to scratch or lick himself. Common triggers include insect bites, parasites (fleas or mites), poor grooming, underlying skin infections, and allergies. To soothe the irritation, veterinarians often recommend using an anti-itch shampoo to help moisturize the skin and coat.
